GREEN CARD LOTTERY PROGRAM

- The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program is administered by the department of State every year. The legislative basis for this program can be found under Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The Act provides for a category of immigrants called “diversity immigrants”. The Act makes 50,000 permanent resident visas available every year to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.
- The visas are distributed among 6 geographic regions. A greater percentage of the visas will be attributed to countries with lower rates of immigration. No visas will be attributed to citizens of countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the US in the past 5 years. A maximum of 7% shall be attributed to each country.
- Education or training requirements: To be eligible, the applicant must have one of the following: (People who do not meet either of the above mentioned requirements should not apply) A high school education or its equivalent, (that is the successful completion of a 12-year course of elementary and secondary education) Two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience to perform.
- Financial requirements: You must show that you can support yourself financially.
- Other exclusion grounds: You must show that you are not otherwise excludable due to either criminality or medical reasons.

CITIZENSHIP & NATURALIZATION
- US citizenship is acquired by birth or through naturalization.
- The following individuals are (subject to certain conditions) US citizens: People born in the US People born outside the US, to two US citizens People born outside the US, to one US citizen.
- Usually proof of citizenship is required
- In order to acquire citizenship through naturalization, one must meet several requirements, including age, residency, physical presence in the US, good moral character, and must be able to read, write, understand and speak English. As well they must demonstrate general knowledge of the US government and history.
- Lastly, the applicant must take an oath of allegiance.
